CSCSW February Salon - "Getting Older and Becoming an Elder"

Presented by Ruth Neubauer, LCSW

"Getting Older and Becoming an Elder", presented by Ruth Neubauer, LCSW

Summary:
Together we will explore both cultural and personal approaches to the inevitability of getting older. As therapists and as our Selves. I will share my work with adults over 65 and invite conversation about working with older adults as the work and understanding of this stage of life is present for all of us. In some ways this time of life can be exceedingly rich; in other ways certain struggles emerge - some obvious, some not so obvious. I look forward to our shared experience as we think about this interesting time of life. 2 CEUs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the developmental age of 70+
  2. Learning about our own relationship to aging
  3. Utilizing impromptu writing as a therapeutic tool

About Ruth:
Ruth has been in private practice since 1987, first in Washington, DC and then in Denver (since 2008). She is the co-founder of "Retirement or WHAT NEXT" - groups for women going through the process of "retirement"- giving lectures, writing papers, holding workshops, and retreats in California, New Mexico, Maryland, Colorado, and Washington, DC. She has been a teacher/facilitator at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) for over 15 years both in DC and in Denver teaching psychology and impromptu writing. Currently, she is in private practice, created The Wisdom of Elderhood (https://www.elderhoodwisdom.org) and facilitating zoom groups for WOMEN OVER 65 exploring relevant issues over 6 week weekly sessions. She also volunteers for the THINGS I CARRY PROJECT offering pro bono help to first responders and health care workers. She is hoping to publish a book of poetry and has a photography website (liminalspace.com).
